Got Law2 – O Canada!
Settling into a new community? Is Canada now your new home? Need an overview of Canadian law? Moving from the United States and need an overview of the nuances between the Canadian and US Justice System?
‘GotLaw2- O Canada’ is an ideal course for new Canadians navigating their way through the nuances of Municipal, Provincial and Federal law. A review of Canadian rights and responsibilities is made, and a history of Canadian Law is discussed. How to speak with police and municipal by-law officers and other representatives of the Canadian justice system is also part of the workshop.
Topics covered are:
- Landlord/tenant rights and responsibilities
- Contract law
- Health Care Act
- Not-for profit housing rights and responsibilities
- Criminal law
- Provincial law
- Family Law
- Small Claims Court – Procedures and court filing tips and advice
- Municipal law – tickets, by-laws
All participants leave with a list of helpful resources and contact information for various agencies such as Service Canada, Landlord and Tenant Board, Law Society of Upper Canada.
Before a workshop is delivered, instructors meet with community organizers, social workers, community members, and/or event co-ordinators, Elders etc. in order to ensure relevant, timely and useful information is delivered.
Cultural and religious nuances are taken into consideration in the delivery of information.
